ISLAMABAD (PAN’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Friday.

The bomber, when stopped by security forces, blew himself up near a checkpoint of the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary (FC) in the high-security Cantonment area, local officials said.

The blast hit a vehicle FC convoy carrying its commandant Abdul Majeed Marwat, who was the target. Marwat, however, managed to escape unhurt, said Assistant Commissioner of Peshawar Habibullah Arif.

Police officer Mohammad Faisal said the suicide attacker was on a motorbike.

Combined Military Hospital (CMH) sources confirmed receiving four bodies, saying 17 were being treated.

A spokesman for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Ehsanullah Ehsan, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had targeted the FC for operations against the Taliban and tribal people.

One dead body and 14 injured were evacuated to Lady Reading and Combined Military Hospitals following the explosion on the Fakhr-i-Alam Road when an FC convoy was passing. At least two of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

Security forces cordoned off the site, with an official of the bomb disposal squad saying that up to 12 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack. The dead included two women and some FC officials.
