Kabul seeks more foreign help in war on drugs

KABUL in the fight against drugs, a challenge Kabul cannot deal with on its own.

The international community’s commitment to the counterterrorism struggle in Afghanistan had declined, alleged a spokesman for the Ministry of Counternarcotics, Abdul Qayyum Samer.

If the global fraternity did not enhance its support, the war on narcotics in Afghanistan would fail to produce the desired results, he told a press conference in Kabul.

“The campaign against drugs is not confined to Afghanistan, but it is an international issue. And that’s why we need cooperation from the world, particularly regional countries,” the spokesman remarked.

Samer said although the United States, Britain and the UN had been supporting Afghanistan, their assistance remained in sufficient.

“International drug mafia and militants are trying to mount pressure on farmers in insecure areas of Afghanistan to increase poppy cultivation,” he added.

This year, 157,000 hectares of land was cultivated with poppies crops across the country, where the government could eradicate 15,000 hectares, the spokesman concluded.
