KABUL, two women were killed and a third committed suicide in west and north of the country, officials said on Thursday.

Police have detained a man who shot and killed a woman and a man on allegation of adultery in western Herat, where a young girl allegedly committed suicide.

The couple was killed in Nasan village of the Injeel district, according to police spokesman Col. Noor Khan Nikzad, who added the detainee had confessed to the double-murder. The detainee insisted he had caught the pair red-handed while doing sex, the police official said.

Nikzad said a teenage girl was found dead on Thursday in Jabreel area of Herat City, the provincial capital.

He said police had arrested the girl’s father and two brothers in the 12th police district for interrogation.

A resident of the area, Raza, said the girl, a 8th grade student, strangulated herself to death with a rope. He claimed she would often face aggression at home for what her family thought being prone to immoral behaviour.

In northern Kunduz province, a 22-year-old woman was found dead with visible signs of torture on her body.

Women’s Affairs Director Nadira Gayah said the married woman had been throttled with a rope before being killed and beaten.

She had no further details, but said the murder was a result of a family dispute.

She asked security personnel to arrest the killers and prevent acts of violence and crimes against women.

Police spokesman Syed Sarwar Hussaini said police had arrested two family members of the victim.
