PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): A teenage girl exchanged fire with police for 40 minutes before her surrender in northern Baghlan province, officials said on Sunday.
The 17-year-old opened fire at the headquarters of Tala Wa Barfak district on Friday evening using an AK-47 after she took position to a nearby wall, the district chief, Faiz Mohammad Amiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The girl surrendered to police and she was released to her family at the request of elders who intervened, he said.
The firefight lasted 40 minutes because police did not want to harm her, Amiri said, identifying the girl as a daughter of a former local jihadi commander.
Amiri thought the girl might have ‘mental disorder’ because she took a Kalashnikov from her house and opened fire at police guarding the district headquarters for no reason.
He said police were investigating if she had been encouraged by someone to attack the police.”If it is proved the girl has no mental problem and has intentionally carried out the attack, she will be brought to justice,” the official said.
Tribal elder Abdul Rahim said he requested the girl to stop firing and surrender and she did. The girl was bailed out, he said, adding her family refused to allow him to talk to her about the reason behind her action.
