MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have assumed full control for security in Chak district of central Maidan Wardak province, the US military and Afghan officials said on Monday.
ANA troops from 3rd Toli, 4th Brigade, 203rd Corps took over the responsibility after participating in numerous Commando and ANA Special Forces-led counterinsurgency operations over the past six months, the coalition said in a statement.
The Afghan forces effectively demonstrated their ability to support the government’s initiatives to protect residents, it added.
“I believe that our forces can and will maintain security in the district, especially if they are appropriately increased,” said provincial council member Haji Sher Shah Bazoon. “It is going to require the cooperation of the ANA, the police, and every other Afghan security force to ensure a successful transition in our security.”
Last week, the 203rd Corps sent more ANA soldiers, weapons, and equipment to augment the ANA forces currently securing the Chak district Center. Upon arrival, the ANA met with US Special Forces to discuss the transition and began assuming control of the critical terrain checkpoints throughout the district.
Maidan Wardak police chief Brig. Gen. Zazai believed ANA was capable of providing long term security support to the district with continued support from local villagers and the government.
“The security of Chak district is important for the overall maintenance of security in Wardak province,” said Zazai. “The departure of US Special Forces is going to bring about many changes to the security situation in Chak. I believe that we will be successful during this change, providing enough of us come together to work for the good of the citizens of Chak District and the entire province.”
“Long-term success is going to require the cooperation of the people and their cooperation will depend highly on the commitment of the local leadership,” said Governor Abdul Majid Khan Khogyani. “We are going to do our best to recruit and increase support for the ALP and make this a reality in Nerkh and Chak districts.”
