KABUL): The Ministry of Economy on Sunday banned 140 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for failing to abide by the prescribed rules and regulations, an official said.

A decision on proscribing the NGOs came at a high-level meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister Prof. Hukam Khan Habibi, a spokesman for the ministry, Najibullah Amin, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Attending by representatives from relevant ministries, the meeting discussed in detail NGO operations across the country. The participants agreed to scrap the licences of 140 organisations.

Without naming the entities, the spokesman said the participants expressed pleasure over NGO activities. However, they stressed adherence to the laws governing their operations, including submission of activity reports.

Amin accused the dissolved organisations, 10 foreign and 130 Afghan, of violating the relevant rules. However, he did not elaborate on the violations. Currently, 2,198 international and local NGOs are operating in the country.
