JALALABAD (PAN insurgents were killed during clashes with security forces and roadside bombings in eastern Nangarhar and Laghman provinces, officials said on Wednesday.

Armed rebels attacked the district headquarters building and nearby villages in the Hesarak district of Nangarhar, sparking a fierce gun-battle with security forces before dawn.

Police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News six attackers were killed after police returned fire. Security personnel escaped unhurt, but a woman was injured in fire from the rebels.

A Hesarak resident, Ismail, said the retreating insurgents also fired gunshots at civilian homes, injuring a woman. The gunbattle that broke out around 2am lasted for two and a half hours.

In Laghman, four militants were killed during separate incidents. The governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak, said one rebel was killed when a landmine he was planting in Gulkari area on the outskirts of Mehtarlam went off prematurely late on Tuesday night.

Another three fighters were killed in a similar incident on the highway between Mehtarlam and Alingar district.
