24 rebels dead in Hesarak fighting

JALALABAD (PAN): Twenty-four insurgents have been killed in fierce clashes in the Hesarak district of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Sunday.

The militants attacked Mohammad Kala, Khanjar and Qarargah areas of the district late on Saturday, touching off an eight-hour gunbattle with police, the provincial police spokesman said.

Col. Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News 24 attackers were killed and 10 others wounded in the fight. One policeman was also killed and three others were injured, he said.

Abdul Khaliq Maroof, the district chief, said one of his security guards was killed and another wounded in the firefight. He saw two policemen wounded in the fire exchange.

Resident Ismail said the fighting that erupted last night intensified in the morning, killing an elderly woman and injuring three others, including a child.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, said five local policemen and two fighters were killed in the clashes.
