Security for the Balamurghab’s district of northwestern Badghis province transitioned from foreign troops to Afghan forces on Wednesday, officials said.

The security responsibility for Qala-i-Naw and four districts was given to Afghan forces last year, when Balamurghab’s transition was delayed due to insecurity, the governor’s spokesman, Sharafuddin Majidi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The situation would improve after the security switch, hoped a tribal elder from the district, Syed Ahmad. He viewed the security transfer as a major stride toward national sovereignty.

However, he said the government should pay attention to remote areas of the district, where militants remained strong.

International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops had quit the district six months ago, but the security responsibility was formally handed over to Afghan personnel at a ceremony today, said the provincial police chief, Sharafuddin Sharaf.
