KABUL facilities on Wednesday, an official said.

The girl students were poisoned soon after entered their classrooms in the morning, the education ministry spokesman, Amanullah Iman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A number of students, who started vomiting and suffered other problems, were evacuated to Istiqlal, Babur and other hospitals, he said.

Iman added: “We can’t comment what the motive behind the attack is? We have launched a joint probe with the public health ministry into the incident.”

A public health ministry spokesman, Dr. Kanishka Turkistani, confirmed the incident. However, he declined giving more information.

A number of people gathered in front of the school in the Chehelsatoon locality of the capital, expressing their concern over the condition of their children.

Ayesha, one of the pupils poisoned, criticised the government for failing to prevent such incidents.

Declining to be named, a schoolteacher said dozens of students from third to twelfth grades went unconscious as they entered classrooms on third floor of the building. She confirmed her daughter was among the victims.

A source in Istiqlal Hospital said on condition of anonymity the number of poisoned students was too high and there was no space for admitting all of them.
