LASHKARGAH (PAN): Construction work on three projects would be launched soon in southern Helmand province, an official said.
The schemes included the construction of Kajaki power dam, a cotton factory and a building for Helmand University, Governor Mohammad Naeem said.
Central government officials had promised several times implementation of the projects but work on them was yet to be initiated, he told a press conference on Thursday evening.
He said this time around, the schemes were on the government’s priority list. After a formal decision by the Cabinet, tribal elders and members of parliament from the province visited the president last week. Karzai assured them of the execution of the projects.
“I hope the cotton factory would be reconstructed in a year with financial support from the ministries concerned and the Indian government,” the governor said.
Its reconstruction would help reduce poppy cultivation and address economic problems of Helmand residents, he said, adding work opportunity would be provided for thousands of people.
