SHARAN (PAN): Residents on Sunday demanded the deployment of the Afghan Local Police (ALP) force to the Mata Khan district and Sharan, the capital of southeastern Paktika province.
ALP deployment to villages was important to thwart insurgent activities there, Malik Faizullah, a tribal elder from Khwajakhel area, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the Taliban were harassing the people in remote areas by accusing them of spying for the government if they accepted jobs in provincial departments. Many people had been killed by the rebels on such charges, the elder alleged.
In order to flush out militants and gunmen, youth were ready to join the ALP, said Kalimullah, a 24-year-old dweller of Sharan. He called fighters a hurdle to development projects and other routine activities in the area, where youth remained jobless and children lacked access to education.
Haji Naqibullah, a tribal elder from Mata Khan district, claimed that the Taliban had been active in many parts of the town, threatening residents. There was an urgent need for the ALP deployment to let the people live in peace.
Mohammad Ali, a resident of Syedo village, said the local police had been able to provide security in other areas. But in his village, rebels had a field day, bombing school and other public places, he lamented.
Police chief, Brig. Gen. Dawlat Khan Zadran, said they planned to station the force in Mata Khan, Yousafkhel and Zherok districts, as well as Sharan.
