HERAT CITY (PAN): Gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead three civilians in western Herat province, where a man was stabbed to death in a separate incident, an official said on Sunday.
In northwestern Farah, a Taliban commander was detained along with two accomplices during an operation on Saturday evening, Herat police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Some documents recovered from the detainees showed they were planning bomb attacks in Herat City, the provincial capital, he said, without elaborating.
Also on Saturday, unknown motorcyclists gunned down three civilians in what appeared to be a personal enmity in the second police district of Herat City, Ahmadi said.
A third civilian was stabbed to death with a knife by unknown people in the same area on Saturday. Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the killers.
Elsewhere, one Afghan Local Police (ALP) member was killed and another was missing after an insurgent attack that took place on Saturday evening in the Sra Rawza district of southeastern Paktika province.
The provincial police chief, Dawlat Khan Zadran, confirmed the incident, saying a group of insurgents stormed an ALP post, killing one policeman and abducting another.
A resident of the area, declining to be identified, said the off-duty ALP members were on their way home when gunmen intercepted their vehicle, killing one and taking away another.
