LASHKARGAH (PAN): A new computerised power billing system has been introduced in the southern Helmand province, officials said on Wednesday.

The old billing regime was ineffective in terms of timely payments and public interference in affairs of the energy department, Director of Water and Energy Eng Faizullah said.

The new billing system would help in the distribution of bills to all consumers in an organised fashion and saving time, he said, asking government employees and customers to make use the facility.

Some government departments defaulted on paying bills, with the result that a huge amount of 96 million afghanis had been outstanding against them, the director said, stressing early clearance of the arrears.

Governor Massoud Bakhtawar, meanwhile, promised he would instruct government departments to pay their bills on time.

But a resident of Lashkargah, Akhtar Mohammad, suggested the recovery of electricity bills should be privatised because government officials were inefficient and corrupt.
