KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Thursday laid the foundation stone of a township project in the Qasaba locality near the Kabul airport.

Consisting of 111 blocks and 3333 flats, the residential scheme is estimated to cost $179 million being provided by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It would take three years to be completed by a leading UAE construction company Tarojan.

President Hamid Karzai, Cabinet ministers, members of parliament, UAE Ambassador to Afghanistan and other officials attended the ground breaking ceremony for the township.

Karzai said the scheme would help resolve housing problem facing many residents of Kabul, calling the project a great UAE assistance to Afghans who could not afford purchasing expensive houses. He promised closely monitoring the construction process during its implementation.

Urban Development Minister Hassan Abdulahi said residential flats were being constructed on 134.5 acres of land that had been allotted to the project.

He said the township would have five-storey blocks that would have all facilities like school, health clinics, mosques, kindergartens, canalisation, savage system, clean drinking water supply system, roads and recreational parks.

Officials said the urban development ministry and an international company Allis Don would jointly oversee the project’s implementation.
