KABUL and Badakhshan provinces.

Sixteen insurgents were killed and three others wounded during a clash with police in the Warduj district of Badakhshan, police official Col. Jehangir said.

He said the clash broke out on Friday night when a group of Taliban attacked a police post, killing a policeman.

The governor’s spokesman Maulavi Ziauddin said a Taliban commander was among the dead.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed 14 policemen were killed and 19 others were wounded in the attack.

He confirmed the death of only one fighter, saying the fighters also overran two police posts.

In Ghor, eight Taliban militants were killed during a clash with police in Barkhol area of Dolina district.

A group of Taliban stormed a police post on the Ghor-Herat highway, sparking a battle with police, Governor Sayed Anwar Rahmati said. Two policemen were wounded in the attack, he added.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed 10 policemen were killed during the attack, but stopped short of giving further details.
