MPs confer on security situation behind closed doors

KABUL or lower house on Monday discussed growing insecurity in the country and its relationship with the Presidential Palace, lawmakers said.

“The security situation is getting worse and the situation cannot be brought under control as long as Pakistani and Iranian spies are not removed from the Presidential Palace,” a public representative from Kandahar, Hamidzai Lalai, said of the discussion that took place behind closed doors.

Another lawmaker Shakiba Hashimi said Pakistani and Chechen fighters were openly operating in some districts and if the insecurity was not curtailed, it could delay the presidential elections.

She asked the international community to continue cooperating with the Afghan government in maintaining peace and conducting peaceful elections.

“Until linguistic and tribal differences among lawmakers remain, they should talk peace in the country,” remarked Abdul Rahim Ayubi, a member from Kandahar. He warned of starting hunger strike in parliament if lawmakers failed to shun their differences inside the house.

“People are concerned about increasing violence, so the Wolesi Jirga should find a solution to mitigate those concerns,” speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said.

He hinted at more closed door discussions on the security situation and the Wolesi Jirga’s relations with the Presidential Palace.
