ASADABAD (PAN): Police on Saturday claimed seizing “chemical weapons” that were to be used in an assassination attempt on the governor of eastern Kunar province.

Kunar police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Syedkhel, told reporters in Asadabad the weapons were confiscated by detective police in the Noor Gal district on Friday.

He alleged Pakistani intelligence agencies wanted to assassinate Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi and the plot was to be executed on the Kunar-Jalalabad highway by members of the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-i-Taiba.

Syedkhel said the cache included Russia-made chemical weapons and four machine guns used by the Pakistan Army.

Wahidi confirmed police had foiled the assassination plot hatched by Pakistani intelligence agencies. However, he gave no further information about the conspiracy.
