MAIMANA (PAN’s decision on excluding tribe’s name from new computerised national identity cards (CNICs).

After a long discussion, the Wolesi Jirga decided on Wednesday against the tribe’s mention in CNICs. However, the lower house approved the inclusion of the holder’s last name and religious in the cards.

A draft law regarding population census, having seven chapters and 39 articles, was approved by the assembly to prevent fraud in issuance of the cards.

More than 500 people gathered at the Department of Municipality in western Faryab province, warning if the parliamentary decision was not reversed they would not accept the CNICs.

“Don’t cheat us on a tribe’s identity and language; you will regret in future,” said a tribal elder, Abdul Qudus Qaleech, addressing lawmakers. It was the right of every tribe to keep its identity and language, he argued.

The government should pay attention to their demand, otherwise they would not receive the new ID cards, he warned.

The Wolesi Jirga decision was the handiwork of a group that wanted compromise on the identity of tribes, said a member of Faryab Civil Society Network, Syed Tajuddin Tashqin.

A member of the Ulema Asadullah, quoted a Quranic verse in which Allah says: “We have divided you into sections and tribes to let you know each other…”
