KABUL minister and asked the government to make academic positions elective.
The protest erupted after Social Sciences Faculty Dean Ghulam Farooq Abdullah and a Lecturer Faisal Amin were sacked by Ministry of Higher Education Obaidullah Obaid as over hunger strike by some students of the faculty.
“As long as the higher education minister does not resign, our problems will persist,” remarked a protesting lecturer, Faizullah Jalal.
Another lecturer of the Sharia faculty, Abdul Maroof Rasikh, said the removal of the minister, approval of a higher education law, financial and administrative autonomy of universities and more student hostels were among their demands.
Abdul Baqi Banwal, also a lecturer at the university, said that academic positions should be made elective to prevent possible tensions.
“When we come to the university, we see our teachers protesting in scorching heat. We are obliged to join them,” said a student of the Law and Political Science Faculty, Mohammad Qasim.
