KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A man gunned down his sister on suspicion of having an illicit relationship with a boy in northeastern Kunduz province, an official said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when the 18 years old was killed with a Kalashnikov in Khak Kani area on the outskirts of Kunduz City.

Syed Sarwar Hussaini, the police spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the killer suspected his sister had sexual relations with another man.

Police seized the Kalashnikov from the house where the incident happened, he said, adding the victim’s mother was injured in the shooting.

The girl’s body was transferred to hospital, where a medical examination showed she had been killed with bullets, Director of Public Health Dr. Saad Mukhtar said.

Nadera Giah, director of women’s affairs, condemned the incident and asked for deterrent punishment to the murderer.

Women activists and Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) members had warned last month of protests if a woman was killed, she recalled, explaining the current situation did not allow such events.

At least 10 women and girls have been killed as a result of domestic violence over the last three months, compared with 17 deaths in the last solar year.

Two women were killed by their husbands and a third was put to death for running away from her home in Khanabad district.

Director of (AIHRC) for Kunduz, Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces Hayatullah Amiri expressed concern over increasing violence against women, asking the authorities concerned to arrest the perpetrators.
