JALALABAD (PAN): Construction work on a 10-kilometre road connecting eastern Nuristan province with northeastern Badakhshan was launched on Sunday, an official said.

Nuristan Governor Tamim Nuristani told Pajhwok Afghan News the road construction formally began in Paroon. The road, half a million dollars project, would take one and a half month to complete.

It would connect Paroon with Karan and Manjan district of Badakhshan passing through some mountains, said the governor, who complained his repeated calls for paving streets and roads had fallen on deaf ears.

“There is no blacktopped road in Nuristan. Roads are the basic need which should be met,” Nuristani stressed, urging higher-ups in Kabul to heed his demands.

The deputy head of provincial council, Amanullah Inayatur Rahman, said the central government should pay special attention to reconstruction projects in Nuristan.

The new road between Nuristan and Badakhshan would help resolve many problems the Nuristanis faced due to the frequent closure of the Nuristan-Kunar highway by insurgents.
