2,156 freed from Bagram jail in 14 months

KABUL): A high-level meeting, chaired by President Hamid Karzai, on Thursday discussed a string of attacks on judicial institutions in recent months and their possible implications for detainees.

Attacks on the Supreme Court and relevant institutions were indicative of the Taliban’s efforts to keep innocent people held on suspicion of having links to the rebels languishing in prison, the participants believed.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said the real motive behind suicide assaults on the Supreme Court in Kabul and a courthouse in Farah province came up for discussion at the meeting.

As a result of hectic efforts by the government, the Bagram detention facility transitioned from the US military to Afghan control earlier this year.

Commander of Bagram Detention Facility Gen. Ghulam Farooq Barakzai informed the participants that 2,156 Afghans had been freed from the jail over the past 14 months in compliance with court orders.

Tuesday’s suicide bombing at the entrance to the apex court had come days after the National Security Council asked the ISAF commander to shift cases of all Bagram jail inmates to Afghan authorities, the statement said.

“After investigating the two attacks, we have reached the conclusion that the Taliban carry out such terrorist acts at the behest of their foreign masters to keep innocent Afghans languishing in jails,” it added.
