KABUL and the United States is due to take place in Kabul shortly, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said on Sunday.

The ministry spokesman Janan Musazai told a press conference the new round would take place in Kabul in the near future. He said it was hoped the agreement would be finalised soon.

President Hamid Karzai has been insisting his government would sign the proposed agreement keeping in mid matters of national interests, Musazai said.

Karzai’s demands include a US commitment to guarantee peace in Afghanistan, a long-lasting international support for Afghan security forces, and stability in the country.

The foreign ministry spokesman said the talks had so far been constructive and friendly, saying a final decision on the agreement would come from the traditional Loya Jirga.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told congressional lawmakers on Wednesday that negotiations on the BSA had entered a final phase.

The US has not confirmed how many troops will remain in Afghanistan post-withdrawal. Sources familiar with the talks say the two countries have established several working groups to discuss issues like air-space management, bases, telecommunications, and transit routes.
