JALALABAD (PAN): Expired food items weighing 12 tonnes which had been seized over the past three months in eastern Nangarhar province were on Monday torched, officials said.
The materials burnt included expired biscuits, non-alcoholic beverages, milk packs and other food items that had been collected from shops in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, and nearby towns, food inspector with the municipality, Obaidullah Agha, said. He estimated worth of the stuff at 1.5 million afghanis.
A Jalalabad resident Ahmad Munir said shopkeepers were playing with people’s lives by selling expired and substandard food items. He asked the government to launch a crackdown on shopkeepers involved.
