Halt to Ghazni optic fiber plan blamed on rebels

GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Residents of this ancient southern city demand early completion of an optic fiber project, claiming militants and some mobile phone companies are creating hurdles to the project.

“Work on the project has been in progress over the past two years. I don’t know why it could not be completed so far,” a Ghazni University student, Jamal, said.

Another resident, Mohammad Rahim, complains roads have been dug at various locations but cables are yet to be buried.

“People in Ghazni have no access to internet and internet services being provided by mobile companies are expensive, so it is important to complete and inaugurate the optic fiber project as soon as possible,” he said.

“Telecommunications companies are behind the delay in completion of the optic fiber because if it is executed, no one will use internet services of mobile phone companies”, another resident of the city, Mohammad Ashraf, believes

He asked the government not to use security problems as an excuse for a delay in completing the project and should instead accelerate efforts in this regard.

However, the provincial telecommunications and information technology director, Eng. Ainuddin, cited insecurity as the main reason behind their inability to complete the optic fiber project.

“The line between Kabul and Ghazni has been several times cut off by militants,” he claimed, saying the issue had been shared with the ministry concerned and it is expected work on the project would be resumed soon.
