MAIMANA (PAN insurgents killed five Afghan Local Police (ALP) members during attacks on three security posts in the Qaisar district of northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Wednesday.

The security posts were attacked in Nawabad and Khwaja Kinti areas on Tuesday evening, the district chief, Abdul Jamil Siddiqui, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Another two members of the force were wounded and six machine guns were seized by the assailants, he added. The attacks were sparked by ALP’s arbitrary actions, Siddiqui said.

He added the attack had been discussed with senior provincial officials and an operation would be launched to recapture the security posts and clear the area of insurgents.

The slain ALP personnel had recently been deployed to the newly built posts in the area, said the provincial council secretary, Syed Abdul Baqi.

However, residents said the security personnel responded to the attacks with firing into the air and left their posts without putting up any resistance.

The Taliban torched the three posts and the ensuing fire burnt nearby wheat crops spread over tens of acres of land, they claimed.
