JALALABAD (PAN attack.

The lightning storm occurred as heavy rains lashed the Shigal district of Kunar on Wednesday afternoon, police spokesman Sher Wali Samim told Pajhwok Afghan News. The dead included two young men, he said.

In Nangarhar, a group of Taliban fighters attacked a border police post in the Zhai area in Nazian district, the governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, said.

Three border policemen were killed and as many were wounded during the ensuing clash that lasted three hours, he said, adding the attackers had suffered heavy casualties but exact figures were unknown.

Resident Ahmad Nabi, however, said the clash lasted five hours, with both sides suffering heavy casualties.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed that five border policemen had been killed and 13 others wounded during the attack.

He acknowledged the death of only one fighter, saying three police vehicles were also destroyed.
