KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The European Union Delegation and the Afghanistaninfo-icon National Blood Safety and Transfusion Services Directorate (ANBSTS) launched the first Blood Drive programme in Kabul on Sunday.

In Afghanistan, a country with one of the highest incidences of infant and child morbidity and mortality, blood supplies are vital but often remain in scarce supply.

A statement from the European Union said the main objective behind launching the programme was to promote blood donations to save life and support the blood bank at the Ministry of Public Healthinfo-icon.

EU Special Representative Vygaudas Usackas, acting Minister of Health Dr. Basir Sarwari and staff from diplomatic representations and international NGOs attended the program.

While donating blood, Usackas said:" This is really a noble mission the Afghan blood service is doing. I'm very pleased to be part of this event. If for me this is a very small gesture it will save life and this is so important in Afghanistan…”
