QALAT (PAN): One policeman was killed and the crime branch chief for southern Zabul province injured along with two others in an explosion, an official said on Sunday.

The blast took place on Saturday evening in Qalat, the provincial capital, in front of a guesthouse of ex-provincial council chief, Mohammad Daud Gulzar. He escaped unhurt.

An eyewitness told Pajhwok Afghan News crime branch chief, Mohammad Rasul, and three policemen were wounded in the incident. One of the policemen later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Deputy Governor Mohammad Jan Rassoulyar confirmed the incident, saying the crime branch chief and his subordinates were in stable condition. Police have launched an investigation.

Ex-provincial council chief, Daud Gulzar, said he was the target of the attack. But he was not at his home at the time of the explosion.

“Although I’m no longer in a government position, peace in Afghanistan remains a top priority for me. Just because of being involved in the process, I have come under attack,” Gulzar said.
