KABUL): Four demonstrators were wounded in police fire after a protest turned violent in the Pul-i-Charkhi area on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway on Monday.

The protestors alleged the security personnel had killed last week at least seven civilians and injured several others in the Deh Sabz district of the capital.

Hundreds of people blocked two busy highways linked Kabul with Nangarhar and northern provinces, asking for prosecution of the policemen involved in the incident.

A protestor, Qari Sadruddin, told Pajhwok Afghan News if their demand was not met, they would block more highways. Responsibility for any untoward incident would rest with the government, he warned.

Security officials said police used tear gas and fired into the air, injuring the four people who were taken to hospital.

A statement from the Ministry of Interior said police had given many sacrifices for protecting the people and the territory, but some elements provoked protests to create a law and order situation and problems for masses.

It accused such individuals of not informing police before the demonstrations. In a situation like this, police reserved the right to prevent the violent demonstrations and arrest criminals, the statement added.
