TIRINKOT (PAN): A dozen people, including security personnel, were killed during a suicide attack on a reserve police guest house in central Uruzgan province on Friday, officials and witnesses said.

The bomber struck at about 1.00pm when a large number of Reserve Police Battalion officials were taking lunch at the guest house in Tirinkot, the provincial capital.

Abdullah Himmat, the gubernatorial spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the bomber was wearing a police uniform. Several officers and civilians were among the fatalities, he said.

Ambulances were seen in the area to transport the casualties to hospital, one official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity. He said the attack caused 12 fatalities among the policemen.

As civil hospital authorities refused to answer media queries about the casualties, a knowledgeable source in the battalion said six of the policemen were injured in the assault.

The wounded were under medical treatment at the Provincial Reconstruction facility, as well as the civil hospital, the source revealed. However, he did not comment on their condition.

A medic at the Uruzgan Civil Hospital, meanwhile, said four bodies and six wounded policemen had been brought to the hospital from the bombing site.

Earlier in the day, two people were killed and eight others wounded in a suicide attack at the Friendship Gate at 9.30am at the Pak-Afghan border in southern Kandahar province.

Elsewhere in Uruzgan, two sheperds were killed in a blast in Chora district, Himmat said, blaming the insurgents for planting the landmine. The victms belonged to the nomadic Kuchi tribe, he added.
