LASHKARGAH (PAN): Police shot dead a detained tribal elder after he tried to escape from a jail in the Kajaki town of southern Helmand province, an official said on Sunday.
Kajaki police chief, Faizullah Akhundzada, said police had arrested the elder for having links with the Taliban. A Kalashnikov, a military uniform and two hand grenades had been recovered from the detainee’s house during a police raid.
He identified the slain individual as Abdul Qadir, who the police official said had been supporting Taliban insurgents. The raid on Qadir’s house was based on an intelligence tip, Akhundzada said.
A Kajaki resident, Mudir Masoom, told Pajhwok Afghan News police had arrested Qadir on for his connections with the Taliban. He was shot dead on Saturday night, the resident added.
He said the elder, hailing from Mian Rodi village, had served as district council member five months ago. Masoom accused police guards of intentionally killing the elder.
