Jobs, security sought for surrendering Taliban

At a ceremony for a number of fighters who joined the peace process, provincial council head, Syed Waheed Qitali, said many of the militants jointed Taliban fighters due to poverty and lack of personal security for them.

Leading the 12-member group, Arbab Nadir told reporters they were active against the government and foreign troops in Adraskan, Shindand and Guzra districts of the province.

They joined the peace process at the invitation of the provincial peace council and would try to convince his comrades to shun the insurgency, he added.

Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi welcomed the surrendering militants to join the peace process and pledged providing them with employment opportunities and security.

Over the past two years, more than 900 fighters have joined the peace process in Herat, said HPC provincial head, Maulvi Ghulam Rassoul. Jobs would be provided for them after they underwent technical training, he promised.
