KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Thursday asked traders to avoid increasing prices of daily-use items and financially help destitute families.

During his biweekly speech, Karzai said assisting the needy was a necessary act for the wealthy, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

“There are many people who face economic problems on a daily basis in our villages and cities and keep fasting during the holy month,” the president said.

The wealthy people should help their needy compatriots, he observed. “As a result of your aid and assistance, the poor would find something to eat in Iftar.”

Charity organisations were duty-bound to step up aid delivery to the deserving individuals during the holy month, he said, suggesting Iftari for the poor at mosques.

Karzai called on traders to lower the margin of profit and control prices to help the poor people during the month.
