MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN, especially Balkh province, stem from political issues, including Uzbekistan’s improper attitude to its landlocked neighbour, an official said on Tuesday.

Director of Commerce Mohammad Hashim Barna told a press conference traders’ current problems emerged from political disputes. The second key problem was Uzbekistan’s far-from-satisfactory business links with Afghanistan, he said.

Trade is fast turning into a mafia business in Central Asia, where cooperation among neighbours continues to be weak, according to Barna, who said Afghan entrepreneurs were given bad treatment in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan’s double standards had negatively impinged on the overall business climate at the Hairatan Dry Port in Balkh, he said, suggesting a high-powered delegation’s visit Tashkent to discuss the issues.
