KABUL member for treason.

FACS chief Sadiq Ansari told reporters in Kabul that lawmaker Syed Anwar Sadat from northern Sar-i-Pul province wanted to fuel linguistic and ethnic chaos in the country.

Two days ago when the lower house approved the census law, Sadat opposed the measure, saying it had been adopted despite incomplete quorum.

During the session, 1st Deputy Speaker Mirwais Yasini ruled the law had been approved since 105 of the 136 lawmakers present had raised their green cards.

But some lawmakers, including Sadat, walked out of the session in protest, insisting tribes should be mentioned in the computerised electronic ID cards.

The house agreed tribes should be mentioned in the database, but not written in ID cards, a decision Sadat opposed, saying the issue should be investigated and referred to archive.

“There is no need to mention the Turkmen tribe in ID cards. You know, history is witness they have ruled for 1,000 years and delivered justice.

“But what you are doing except conducting blasts and suicide attacks, you earned a bad name for the nation with administrative and moral corruption. I want Yasini to apologise.”

His comments drew strong criticism from some lawmakers. But Sadat later said his speech had been misunderstood and he was just criticising the government. “I did not mean to criticise a particular tribe and if someone has hurt, I apologise for that”

FACS chief Sadiq Ansari said elements like Sadat were out to bring shame to the nation and fuel tribal differences. “Such non-Afghan figures are trying to promote hatred among the tribes and destroy national unity.”

The federation issued a statement, claiming Sadat was not an Afghan. It urged the Wolesi Jirga to expel him from the house until the end of this month. It also called for Sadat to be kept under judicial observation and tried for treason.

“We call on all tribes, particularly our Uzbek brothers and sisters, to disown Sadat and others like him and work for a united Afghanistan,” the statement said.
