USAID director for Afghanistan sworn in

WASHINGTON (PANinfo-icon): William Hammink, who has served in India and Sudan, was sworn in on Wednesday as US Agency for International Development (USAIDinfo-icon) mission director in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

In this capacity Hammink will direct projects to support sustainable economic growth, good governance and maintaining critical uplift gains in healthinfo-icon and educationinfo-icon sectors.

The USAID mission in Afghanistan is its largest overseas operation. The US assistance to the war-torn nation through the agency totalled nearly id="mce_marker".7 billion in fiscal year 2012.

Prior to this assignment, Hammink served as USAID's mission director in India where he oversaw a id="mce_marker"09 million programme addressing the critical challenges of food security, climate change and health. 

He has also served in Sudan, where he helped parties to the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement implement many of the accord's provisions, including nationwide elections, in April 2010.
