ASADABAD (PAN): Dozens of Afghan and foreign insurgents stormed the Dangam district centre of eastern Kunar province on Friday morning, killing two policemen and wounding several others.

“Five border guards and four national policemen were wounded in the attack that occurred at 4am,” Governor Shujaul Mulk Jalala told Pajhwok Afghan news.

He said the assailants wanted to capture the district, but were beaten back by the security forces. A number of the attackers were killed and wounded, according to the governor.

Security personnel had collected the bodies of three militants along with their weapons and shifted them to the district centre, Jalala said, adding the slain fighters’ identities were yet to be established.

The four-hour fighting came to an end at 8am, the governor said, claiming the government security forces were currently in control of the town.

But the Taliban claimed killing up 20 security personnel as a result of the assault. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said three security posts were also destroyed and five vehicles blown up.

However, local authorities rejected the claim as baseless.
