KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): NATOinfo-icon Secretary General Fogh Rasmussen and Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta on Thursday reviewed the progress of the ISAFinfo-icon campaign and planning for the alliance’s new non-combat mission to train, advise and assist Afghan forces after 2014.

During his visit to Rome, Rasmussen commended Italy’s “pivotal role in ISAF” and its intention to play a leading part in the post-2014 mission, a statement on the NATO website said

The NATO chief, at a meeting with Italian Defence Minister Mario Mauro, discussed ways to improve capabilities amid the current difficult economic times through the use of multinational smart defence projects. Italy participates in 17 of the projects and leads three of them.

Letta announced he would be visiting the Italian troops in Afghanistaninfo-icon on Aug. 12.
