ISLAMABAD: Mamnoon Hussain was elected on Tuesday as Pakistan’s new president, bagging 277 votes from the National Assembly and the Senate. He replaces Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Unofficial results showed 277 votes cast for the candidate of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N). Mamnoon needed 263 votes to win, the state-run television reported.
With the PPP boycotting the ballot, Justice ® Wajihuddin Ahmed, a candidate of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf, outpolled the winner in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
Of the 110 lawmakers voting in the election, 69 cast ballots voted for Wajihuddin and 41 for Mamnoon. But in Sindh Assembly, Mamnoon secured 64 votes while the PTI candidate got only seven.
The PPP had withdrawn its candidate and announced a boycott of the election over reservations about the decision of the Supreme Court to reschedule the poll.
Born in the Uttar Pradesh state of India in 1940, Hussain belongs to Sindh and lives in Karachi, where he owns a textile business. Picking He contested the 2002 elections from NA-250 (Karachi) on PML-N ticket.
