ASADABAD/MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): Heavy rainfall induced flash flooding in central Maidan Wardak and eastern Kunar provinces, destroying several homes and inundating agricultural crops, officials said on Wednesday.

In Kunar, rains lashed Narang district late on Tuesday evening and the ensuing floods washed away at least six homes in Kotki area, the provincial Natural Disaster Management Committee chief said.

Ghulam Ali Sabat said large swathes of agriculture lands were also submerged by floodwaters. A survey was ongoing to assess the scale of losses, he added.

Governor Shujaul Mulk Jalala, who visited the affected areas, distributed relief supplies to the victims. He directed the officials concerned to provide further assistance to the affected families on completion of the survey.

In Maidan Wardak, flash floods triggered by heavy rains and hailstorm badly damaged crops and orchards in the Syedabad district, residents said. Resident Amanullah said the floods and hailstorm hit five villages in the district, destroying crops including onions and potato.

Several orchards were damaged in the disaster, he said, adding the worst hit areas were Babarkhel, Khwaja Ghariban and Jangjai. The resident said affected families were yet to be dispatched relief supplies.
