KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai on Friday phoned Pakistaninfo-icon's new President Mamnoon Hussain and congratulated him on his success in a one-sided election earlier in the week.

Mamnoon was elected on Tuesday as Pakistan’s 12th president, bagging 277 votes from the National Assembly and the Senate. He replaces Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Karzai said Mamnoon's election was a step in the right direction for the neighbouring country, according to a brief statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul.

Pakistan's new head of state thanked the president for his congratulatory call, the statement added.
