KABUL.

HPC Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani, at a meeting with members of the Afghanistan Ulema Council in Kabul, called reconciliation a noble deed that all countrymen must try to promote.

Invitation to peace was the duty of every Muslim and the scholars could play a more effective role than any other group in achieving religious harmony and safeguarding national values, he said.

A majority of scholars, particularly Afghanistan Ulema Council members, have been HPC partners in promoting peace and ending the conflict, killing of innocent people and suicide attacks, he acknowledged.

“When scholars are a source of conveying it to the public, the message of peace is further strengthened,” Rabbani remarked, asking the ulema to work in tandem with the council in restoring stability.

While seeking Islamic countries’ cooperation with HPC efforts, Rabbani said they had planned a series of ulema conferences at national, regional and international levels.

He added one such major conference, to be attended by scholars from the Islamic world, would be held in Kabul during the Week of Peace and National Unity next month.

Rabbani added the council had recently stepped up efforts to build a national consensus on peace with the support of ulema, whose cooperation would be sought in holding such conferences.

The people had been trying to seize every peace opportunity to end the conflict and minimise foreign intervention, the chief peace negotiator observed. However, he admitted lasting peace continued to elude the country.
