 KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai left for Tehran on Sunday to attend Iranian President-elect Hassan Rohani’s inauguration, his office said.

Foreign Minister Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, National Security Advisor Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, his Chief of Staff Abdul Karim Khurram and spokesman Aimal Faizi are accompanying Karzai.

A statement from the Presidential Palace hailed Iran as a friendly country having many religious, cultural and other commonalities with Afghanistan.  

With the notable exception of the US and Israel, Iran has invited world President Asif Ali Zardari has also accepted the invitation.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi and Russian President Vladimir Putin may also visit Tehran.
