KABUL soccer teams would square off in their first-ever encounter in Kabul later this month, an official said on Monday.

Billed as “friendship competition” the match would take place on Aug. 20, the Afghanistan Football Federation’s deputy head told a news conference in the capital.

Humayun Kargar said the event was aimed to promote cooperative relations with Pakistan and Afghan athletes abroad had been invited to the match.

“We want to forge better ties between Kabul and Islamabad through sports at large,” he added.

Kargar hoped the match would help strengthen links between Afghan and Pakistani soccer federations and prepare footballers from the two nations for the upcoming South Asian championship.
