KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A trader was rescued from unidentified kidnappers by police while five insurgents were arrested in northeastern Kunduz province, an official said on Sunday.
Dawlat Shah, who was abducted two days ago in Ashkmash district of Kunduz, was freed late Saturday evening, police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The kidnappers managed to escape as a result of a brief firefight, he said, adding a search for the abductors was underway. The motive behind the trader’s kidnap is yet to be ascertained.
For his part, Dawlat Shah said the kidnappers sought ransom money from wealthy people.
Elsewhere in the restive province, five insurgents were detained during an operation in the Issakhel area of Chahar Dara district.
Hussaini confirmed the incident, saying a Taliban Taj Mohammad, was also among the detainees.
