KABUL, saying it wants to be part of the solution.

Jakarta stood ready to assist Afghanistan in vocational training and offer scholarships to the Afghan students, Indonesian Ambassador Anshory Tadjudin said.

Addressing a reception marking the 68th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence in Kabul on Tuesday night, the ambassador said Indonesians and Afghans would go to the polls next year.

“I certainly hope the elections in both countries may run smoothly and safely with the spirit of democracy…I hope the 68th anniversary of its independence would discover Indonesia as a much more mature country that may further enhance friendship with Afghanistan.”

The two nations established diplomatic links in 1950, he said, recalling first Indonesian President Soekarno’s an official visit to Afghanistan in 1961. Soekarno was accorded a warm welcome by his Afghan hosts.
