Punjab Assembly slams CIA’s drone strikes

Punjab Assembly slams CIA’s drone strikes

Aug 23, 2013 - 16:50

ISLAMABAD (PANinfo-icon): The Punjab Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution against CIA-operated drone attacks in Pakistaninfo-icon’s tribal region near the Afghanistaninfo-icon border.

Punjab Assembly approved the resolution that also asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to play a proactive role in eradicating terrorism from the country.

Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah presented the resolution after the assembly rules were relaxed. Drone strikes were violative of fundamental human rights, it said, warning the raids could damage Pakistan-US ties.

On August 20, a top UN official urged the United States and Israel to clarify the legal basis for the use of unmanned aircraft in Pakistan, Yemen and Gaza. She argued drone strikes violated human rights.

“I urge relevant states to clarify the legal basis for such strikes, as well as the safeguards in place to ensure compliance with applicable international law”, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told the Security Council on Monday.
