WASHINGTON (PAN remained critical, the Obama administration said on Friday, warning Americans against travelling to the war-devastated country.

Noting that remnants of the former Taliban regime and the al-Qaida terrorist network, as well as other hostile groups, remained active, the State Department said no province in Afghanistan should be considered immune from violence.

Potential existed throughout the country for hostile acts, either targeted or random, against US and other Western nationals at any time, it said, adding travel in all areas of Afghanistan continued to be unsafe due to military combat operations.

Landmines, banditry, armed rivalry between political and tribal groups and the possibility of insurgent attacks, including vehicle-borne bombings or other improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the travel advisory said.

The security situation stayed volatile and unpredictable throughout the country, the State Department said, insisting there was significant risk of kidnapping and assassination of US citizens and NGO employees throughout the country.
